2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York, America – 15 Mar 2010
Legendary punk-rock band The Stooges crashed the ultimate party last night: their own induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria – the band has already been rejected from seven previous induction ceremonies.
An otherwise staid affair was given a shot of pure adrenalin after Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong introduced the band and its frontman as “the most confrontational singer we’ll ever see.”
Bare-chested and with middle-finger salutes to all around, 62-year-old James Osterberg, aka The Iguana, aka Iggy Pop, took to the stage to accept the honour in a manner best befitting the most rock ‘n’ roll and defiant artist of his generation.
And as the pocket rocket put it himself so very well: “Roll over, Woodstock. We won.”
Iggy then joined bandmates Scott Asheton and James Williamson to hammer out two of their classic, acid-tinged punk rock classics, ‘Search and Destroy’ and ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’.
Also being inducted were ABBA, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, and The Hollies.
